Brief thoughts from 1 AM in Marseille
9 PM in Marseille: sun is still up. The French have been milling outside the second largest stadium in the nation (the capital of French football, or so I was told by a local radio man named Hugo) having beers and pizza and cigarettes while milling in the street. Some of them play soccer wearing Mbappé jerseys. A healthy smattering of US fans fill in. Dutifully, just before kick-off, everyone descends upon the stands of Stade Vélodrome to a tune of about 67,000.
