It’s been roughly 500 minutes since El Tri scored on the USMNT in a competitive match, let alone win (which happened last in 2019). This rivalry is always a fun one, a celebration, a (mostly) beautiful chaos that feels so specifically ours. But beating Mexico no longer feels like a litmus test, no matter how enjoyable the win of a three-peat Nations League trophy (and I must admit I rather enjoyed myself last eveningβ€” laughing at times, marveling at others, yelling in shock when Tyler Adams ripped off that shot from far out).Β 

But the true test approaches this summer, with the Copa AmΓ©rica. This trophy is preparation for that.Β
